Sleep mode in Windows 10 is a very controversial thing. Some users deactivate it immediately because it is too much of inconvenience, while others think it has many advantages that should not be neglected. One of the main reasons for hating this mode are situations when your computer "falls to sleep" normally but fails to awake as it should – it literally refuses to wake up. When this happens, your only solution is to reboot the device losing all unsaved data, which can be catastrophic. So what you can do to prevent it from happening and what in general you should do when your PC or laptop doesn't wake from sleep mode?
There are multiple reasons for this abnormal behavior. It is a very specific malfunction, which is closely related to the components and parameters of each particular computer. That is why it would be hard for a concrete algorithm guaranteed to fix this problem. Nevertheless, we have a "must do" list of actions divided into several methods that should help you to neutralize this "eternal sleep."
Method #1: perform a driver check
If you cannot wake up your computer from sleep – periodically or all the time – the very first thing you need to check is system drivers and device drivers as well. One incorrectly installed (or missing) driver may result in unstable operation of the system, which can cause troubles such as no response in the sleep mode.
You can check your drivers using Device Manager. Right-click on the "This PC" icon on your desktop (alternatively – on the Start menu) and select Device Manager from the list. Or you can press Win+R on your keyboard and type the following command: devmgmt.msc. When in the Device Manager menu, you need to check all connected devices – there should be nothing marked with an exclamation mark (incorrectly installed drivers) and lines with "Unknown devices."
You should pay extra attention to the video card drivers, as it is highly likely that your graphics card has issues with the sleep mode. You have to sure that the video card driver is not just installed properly but also up to date. In order to cross out your video driver from the "suspects list," you can switch to the integrated graphics solution (if you have it, of course), and put your computer to sleep, then try to wake it up. Some Windows 7 users reported that the Aero Glass Theme was causing the problem, and after switching to another theme, the sleep mode functioned as intended.
For automatic driver updates, you may find various third-party programs. It is a good choice for users are not familiar with drivers or for those who want to save their time. Most of these driver-updating programs are very easy to use and don’t require any specific knowledge. Try using RocketFixer. Method #2: check your USB devices
USB devices are known for blocking normal awakening of the computer from sleep. Main culprits in this department are keyboards and computer mice. In order to check these devices, you need to prevent them from waking your PC from Sleep and Hibernates modes. Follow these instructions:
- Open Device Manager from the context menu that will appear after right clicking on the Start button.
- Find "Mice and other pointing devices."
- Right-click on your mouse and select "Properties."
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer."
- Test Sleep mode, then reverse the changes made with the mouse.
- Do the same procedure (paragraphs 3-4) for your keyboard.
Remember! You should never disable waking up for both keyboard and mouse at the same time because you will have no means to awake your computer after initiating the Sleep or Hibernate mode.
Method #3: modify your current power plan
Some power plans are customized to turn off computer hard drives after a certain period of inactivity and before putting a machine to sleep. However, when you initiate awakening, your HDD might not turn on or does it with a significant delay. It is a common issue for Windows 7 users. That is why we recommend turning this feature off for good.
- Open your Control Panel from the Start menu.
- Once there, change "View by" to "Large Icons" and click "Power Options."
- Select "Change when the computer sleeps" on the left sidebar.
- In the next window, click "Change advanced power settings."
- In the Hard disk, menu find a subsection called "Turn off hard disk after" and set it to zero.
Now even when your computer sleeps, the hard disk will still be active.
Method #4: change BIOS settings
If all previous manipulations proved to be futile, and you still cannot wake your computer normally, there is another method we have in store. It requires changing some settings in BIOS/UEFI. In order to open BIOS, you need to press "Delete" or one of the "F"-buttons depending on your motherboard model and its manufacturer.
This method can be a bit difficult, especially for beginner users, since in different versions of BIOS (not mentioning UEFI) some sections may not have identical names, so not all actions will be in the same order. In UEFI it is more intuitive, and most users can figure out what to do, so let’s take an older version of BIOS as an example in this case.
- Once in BIOS, find "Power Management Setup."
- Open it and look for "ACPI Suspend Type."
- It has two settings that define "how deep" your computer goes into the Sleep mode.
- The S1 parameter includes deactivation of your monitor, hard disk(s), and some expansion cards. Other components will be active but on low power consumption.
- S3 parameter deactivates everything except RAM. You can choose one of these parameters to see how your computer reacts during the waking procedure.
To sum all these things up, we can conclude that in order to avoid errors with waking from sleep or hibernation, it is important to have updated drivers. In addition, you should never use unlicensed software or programs (installers) downloaded from suspicious websites.
