This software is an integrated development environment (IDE) used for computer programming. There are a base workspace and a plugin system for customizing the interface. It's primarily for developing Java applications, but can as well be used for developing applications in other programming languages through plug-ins.

You can also use Eclipse classic to develop documents with LaTeX through a TeXlipse plug-in, as well as packages for Mathematica software.

Why you should use Eclipse Classic

Eclipse Classic comes with a Minimap that offers you a high-level overview of the currently active editor's content which helps in navigation and provides a much better understanding of the code. You can open the Minimap from the main window or by typing minimal in the search box. This software is compatible with different operating systems like Linux, Mac OS, Solaris and Microsoft Windows. Eclipse classic is available in 44 languages including: Albanian, Arabic, Basque, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Klingon, Korean, Kurdish, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Mongolian, Myanmar, Nepali, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

You can extend the ability of this software by installing additional plug-ins written for the Eclipse platform, like development toolkits for other programming languages, and can write and contribute their plug-in modules. Eclipse Classic is a free and open source application that runs under GNU Classpath, and also runs without any problems under IcedTea. Eclipse Classic makes use of plug-ins to provide all the functionality within and on top of the run-time system that is based on Equinox which is an implementation of the OSGi core framework specification.

Eclipse Classic offers the Rich Client Platform (RCP) for development of general purpose applications. Some of the components of this rich client platform are Equinox OSGi which is a standard bundling framework, Core Platform, Standard Widget Toolkit that is very portable, and Eclipse Workbench which contains the views, editors, perspective and wizards tools.
